Worthing Family Photography | Taking the kids to Cissbury Ring

Worthing natural family photos taking during a little hike at Cissbury Ring in Sussex. Award-winning family photographer offering documentary family photography in Worthing.

I love it when families opt for a walk in nature with their kids as part of their family photoshoot. Today's blog features a documentary session from last Summer with a wonderful family from Sussex. We couldn’t have picked a better day! We began the shoot at their beautiful home in Worthing, where the kids proudly showed me their rooms and we spent some time playing in the garden. Then, it was time to hop into the family’s van and make our way to Cissbury Ring for our little walk.

Why Cissbury Ring is Perfect for Family Photography

Cissbury Ring in West Sussex is one of my favourite locations for family photography. With its breathtaking views and the timeless charm of its ancient chalk paths, it’s a place that feels alive with stories.

The Setting: Wild, Open, and Unpretentious

Cissbury Ring is perfect for a little family adventure because it’s wild and free. The open fields and rolling hills let children run, climb, and explore without feeling restricted. There’s no “sit here and smile” pressure; instead, families naturally connect and relax, which makes for the most authentic family photos.

It’s a place where little ones can pick wildflowers, race ahead on the trails, or simply flop into the long grass and stare at the clouds. These moments - the unscripted, unposed ones - are, in my opinion, at the heart of great family photography.

Light That Paints a Story

Photographers often talk about light, and the light at Cissbury Ring can be truly magical. The golden hour here is spectacular, with the low sun casting a warm glow across the hills.

Even on overcast days, there’s something dramatic about the way the clouds sit above the ridge, adding depth and texture. Whether it’s sunny or not, the setting works perfectly to frame families in a way that feels timeless and natural.

Space to Be Yourselves

Cissbury Ring gives families room to breathe. There’s no awkwardness of strangers passing by, no urban distractions. It’s just you, the hills, and the sweeping views of the South Downs. This openness lets families focus on each other.

Parents feel more at ease here, which is so important. When you’re in a beautiful, open space like this, the laughter comes easier, the hugs last longer, and everyone seems to forget the camera is even there.

The Little Moments That Matter

Some of my favourite shots of this family photo session have come from the family simply being themselves. It’s the small, seemingly ordinary moments, that make your family unique. Both boys did so well, it’s quite a steep walk up the hill, and it was a hot day, but there was no complaining from the kids.

If you’re considering a family photoshoot and you want it to feel relaxed, personal, and rooted in real moments, let’s head to Cissbury Ring! You don’t need to pose. You don’t need to overthink it. You just need to show up and let me capture your family in an authentic way resulting in some gorgeous family portraits!
