Capturing the moment | 10 Activities for Your Documentary Family Photoshoot
Documentary family photography is all about preserving the authenticity of everyday moments, and what better way to achieve this than by incorporating activities that you as a family genuinely enjoy? Here are some of my favourite family activities to consider including in your documentary family photoshoot:
Story Time: I always love it when parents read to their children. These “quiet” moments are perfect for capturing those emotional connections.
Board Games: Playing a board game with the family is great when photographing slightly older kids. Candid shots of intense concentration and victory moments can result in some lovely unposed natural shots of the children.
Playground Fun: Head to one the many playgrounds, where the kids can explore and you can (hopefully) enjoy your coffee. I don’t shy away from climbing or hitting a slide either - everything for “the shot”!
Going for a Walk: A leisurely stroll along the seafront, Brighton Pier, or through Hove Park is a wonderful way to capture your family's connections. This classic family activity is one that I personally love! Even though it may seem simple, it can be a great way to explore your neighbourhood or do an activity that you already enjoy doing on a regular basis.
Baking Together: Whether it's biscuits, cupcakes, or a delicious family recipe, I love photographing a family baking together. The messy shots are my favourites!
Trampoline Jumping: Some trampoline action during your family photoshoot is a family photographer’s gateway to get creative with the children’s portraits.
Playing Football: adding a little game of football to the photoshoot is great for getting some serious action shots of everyone!
Toy Time: If you're planning an at-home family photo session, you don’t have to look far for things to do. Whether it's building lego, playing with dolls, or getting all the fancy dress costumes out, these moments are all excellent for getting some lovely candid shots of the kids.
Hide and Seek: This one is especially great for young children and babies. It almost always gets them smiling and laughing (or crying, but hey, that’s ok too!).
Playing in the Garden: Whether it's snack-time for the kids in the garden or playing with bubbles, your family's garden activities provide a great environment for those candid family shots!
Your family photo session doesn’t have to be stiff and boring. You can use any of these family activities or come up with a few of your own. Above all else, your family photos are supposed to be fun!
