Newborn Photographer Hassocks | An in-home documentary session

Back in April, on a sunny day in Spring, when the daffodils were blooming, I did a lovely newborn shoot with baby Rory in Hassocks, West Sussex. Hassocks is a gorgeous little village, close to Lewes and only 7 miles from Brighton, it has direct access to the South Downs so you’re surrounded by stunning countryside.

We had to postpose the shoot a couple of times as the little dude had a rough start and spent his first weeks in the hospital - but luckily he recovered very quickly and we were able to take some newborn photos when he was still very little.

Ed and Lucy had only just recently moved into their home in Sussex and I absolutely adored their place. They had filled the place with colour and light - and both the living room and the kitchen had amazing views over the Downs! We started off with some newborn pictures downstairs. Babies, especially when they are younger than 4 weeks old, do sleep a lot, so during these type of newborn shoots it’s important to take those portraits as soon as the little one opens his eyes!

When we headed upstairs for some closeup shots of Rory’s hands and feet in the bedroom, the cat completely took over the shoot. Normally cats tend to hide when I’m shooting somewhere new, but this one wasn’t shy at all and managed to steal the show for a good 15 minutes!

The second half of the photo session was all about including big brother Olly, who had just come back home from school. After a quick snack he was all ready to go, and we went into the garden for some family portraits, trampoline jumping, and Olly and his dad even played some cricket. We were so lucky that all their trees were blossoming so I could work with some lovely background colours.

I had a great time photographing this lovely family and I am really pleased with the photos. If you’re expecting a baby, you’re living in Sussex, and you are thinking of booking a documentary newborn photographer, then I’d love to hear from you!
