Trying out the GoPro Hero 10 during our family holiday
I’ve been thinking about buying a waterproof camera for ages. Living in Hove, I regularly take families down to the seafront for their family photoshoot and, whilst photographing children on the beach, I often find myself holding my camera high up in the air to avoid big waves. :-) Not the ideal scenario. So I’ve been looking into options to enable me to get really close to where all the water action is without being afraid of ruining my camera.
In the end, I asked a couple of other family photographers for their advice as there already is a lot of great family underwater photography out there! You can obviously go for a waterproof housing for your DSLR or mirrorless camera. However, this can be quite a pricey option! The GoPro Hero seemed like the perfect solution. This camera is waterproof up to 10 meters, super easy to use - and affordable!
The GoPro is obviously a very popular camera, especially for digital content creators, and an amazing choice for shooting video as well. I decided I didn’t need the newest model (GoPro Hero 12) so I went for the GoPro Hero 10. Bear in mind, this is not a full sensor camera and doesn’t have a lot of settings for you to play around with. But GoPros are designed to work well on automatic mode. You can manually set the ISO and the shutter speed, but you can’t control the aperture. GoPros have a fixed aperture lens at ƒ/2.8.
So far I’ve only used this camera on our most recent family holiday, in Gran Canaria, and I’ve mainly been shooting in the widest angle (170 degree superview). Great for those action shots in the water and I loved playing around with this super wide angle view! I have also bought myself the Telesin Dome Port to create those amazing split half underwater photos, but this gadget was so much fun to use in the pool that I am going to dedicate my next blog post to it. So stay tuned for more about using my GoPro Hero 10 - with the Telesin Dome Port - soon! For now, here are some of my favourite shots taken with my GoPro.
