Shoreham Family Photographer | Beach Photoshoot

Family Photography in Shoreham, East Sussex. Natural family beach photoshoot. Little girl thrown in the air by her mummy during a candid family photo shoot. Unposed family portraits in Shoreham by sea.

On the blog today are some shots from a recent Shoreham-by-Sea family beach photoshoot. I love exploring all the nearby towns here in Sussex. Shoreham is only 15 minutes away from Hove by car but I have cycled there before, which takes about half an hour and, if you have a bike, it’s definitely worth a little cycling trip.

You can go all the way along the seafront and about half way you’ll reach Shoreham Harbour where you can cross the locks - Ivy loves doing this - and it also reminds me of home (the Netherlands) where we have lots of locks!

There’s also a lovely cafe, Port Kitchen at Shoreham Port, where you can have a drink or a bite to eat and watch the boats go by in the harbour. The town itself is also really cute so definitely worth a visit.

I normally start off my Slice Of Life sessions at home, but for this one we decided to do the entire photoshoot at the beach. There were quite a few extended family members, so it was good we had up to two hours to get everyone in the photos.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather, a gorgeous warm and sunny day in June! Lovely for the family, but it does mean working with bright direct sunlight for the photographer… In that situation it’s all about finding the right angle to photograph your subject, and always making sure you expose for the subject’s face, not the background!

As I was working with a bigger family than usual we made sure we had a variety of setups on the beach for the more traditional family portraits - we took a few with the beach huts in the background, I used the sea as backdrop, and also the pebbles and the flowers can work really well if you want to add some more depth to your group shots.

The majority of this photo session was still spent on following the kids though, playing with them, and just observing them as they interacted with the adults. This is where the true magic of family documentary photography lies.

Below some of my favourite pictures of this shoot!

If you are living in Shoreham, Worthing, Lancing or anywhere else in East or West Sussex and you are looking for a family photographer to capture some natural family portraits of you and your family then I would love to hear from you!
