How to do a maternity shoot at home | a step-by-step guide
Something slightly different on the blog today. I’ve created a step-by-step guide for documentary family photographers who are not yet, but might be toying with the idea of, adding documentary maternity photo sessions to their portfolio. Hope this is helpful!
1. Pre-consultation:
Start by discussing the session with the expectant mother. It’s really important to understand her preferences, style, and any specific ideas she may have for the shoot. If these ideas are too far from your own photographic approach (let’s say they are after a styled studio photo shoot) it’s often better to be honest and refer them to another maternity photographer that matches their expectations. At home maternity shoots are not for everyone - and that’s OK!
2. Wardrobe:
There is no need to suggest special clothing for a documentary maternity photo shoot, but you could ask your client to wear something comfortable that emphasises the baby bump. I often find that fitted clothes photograph better than, for example, a flared maternity dress.
3. Choose Good Lighting:
Opt for a time of day with soft, natural light (if possible), like early morning or late afternoon. This helps create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
4. Select Suitable Locations:
Once you’re at your client’s house, have a good look at all the rooms and decide on the spaces in the home that can serve as backdrops for the shoot. Base your decision on good lighting first and then search for the best backdrop.
5. Capture The Candid Moments:
Encourage the expectant mother to interact naturally with her loved one(s). Focus on candid and unposed moments, documenting genuine emotions and connections. These moments often occur when you truly connect with your client so make sure you make them feel comfortable in front of the camera!
6. Experiment with your Photography Skills:
Play around with different angles and compositions to add variety to your shots. Capture the moments from above, the side, or even from the floor.
7. Inclusion of Pets or Siblings:
I love including pets or older siblings in my maternity photo shoots. Capturing interactions with pets or siblings adds a genuine and natural dimension to pregnancy photos.
8. Lifestyle Storytelling:
Shooting at home allows you to incorporate elements of the family's daily life into the maternity session. Documenting everyday activities, like making a coffee in the kitchen or reading a story to the older sibling, adds a storytelling aspect to the maternity shoot and will give your pictures that documentary style and feeling.
9. Be Flexible:
Last but not least, be flexible and open to unexpected moments. Sometimes the most beautiful and authentic shots happen spontaneously.
